German Shepherd Dog Portrait

Posted by PaperTails

I am a beginner Pet Portrait Artist, as I have a passion for drawing and creativity and I love animals,

For starters... I have found this image of two German Shepherd Dogs, and thought it had a good composition, and would create a little bit of a challenge for me - as there are two, long haired dogs. I will show you a step by step on my drawing of these gorgeous dogs...work in progress!

I'll keep this regularly updated so you can see where I am with the drawing!

First Step:

I started with an overall sketch of both dogs, but my pencil is too light to be shown in a photo ...
I have stared a the top of the Dog on the right hand side, generally drawings should be done from the lightest colour first, (all over the image rather than in sections) and then progress to the darker shades, I tend to do the dog section by section, which works out well for me - i'm not patient enough to do one colour at a time! I do still progress from light to dark.

2nd Step:

Here are the finished ears,  i will go back to them at the end of the drawing in add a bit more depth.

Step 3:

Here I have started the progression of the top of the head, adding a bit of colour and depth to the eyes.

Step 4:

I have decided to start on the eye on the left, as I'm right handed and didn't want to rub the drawing while i added the details. making sure I outline the eye and it has an expressive shape.

Step 5:

Here i have added the eye detail, i slowed down my drawing to make sure i got the detailing correct, nothing worse than a cartoon eye on a realistic drawing!
(Apologies for the photo quality)

Later today i will be adding to the drawing, keep posted on the progress.
